Because the whole point of a registry is to get the bride what she wants and needs, the pick-name-game wedding registry is a great way to do it. Rather than working with the specific registry items (which would take away the whole spirit of choosing the gift), that themes be put in instead. This allows for different budgets, focuses on the registry, and still allows for some creativity. After all, not everyone can afford a new refridgerator, and this allows guests to manage how much they’re spending, while also making sure that not too many people end up buying the same gifts.
First, someone familiar with the registry (other than the bride or groom) should create the list/category. This could be as simple as: kitchen item, bedroom item, living room item, or, as I would suggest, could take a humorous route: “something that could be used in a game of Clue, something that can fit in a shoe box, something that can disguise something else, something that should NOT be used in the kitchen” and so on. You can easily turn the wedding shopping into a game this way, –and also leads many of the guests into original thinking, especially for a bride who has a sense of humor.
All those invited to the shower can then purchase their gifts and bring them to the party, meanwhile, having a great time. The person who had the original list of categories can print sheets with the various categories and have guests try to match the gift to the category; –much like drawing names out of a hat, or bag, although instead, drawing categories of gifts to buy. For extra fun, the guest who matches the most categories to gifts wins a prize, hopefully something very very silly.
