Who really enjoys the tedious tasks of cleaning the bathroom, doing the laundry or taking out the trash? Honestly, nearly no one. So what is a good way to go about getting your kids involved in the chores without making it seem like such a tedious task? Simply turn it into a game. Write down the names of everyone involved in the household chores, kids and parents, than select a chore and draw a name. To add excitement give point values to the chores, ex. cleaning the bathroom is 15 points while taking out the trash is 10 points.
The tasks are thus randomly assigned with the goal being who can get the most points by the end of a pre-established time period, say a month or two. Than have prizes for the winners, ex. first place gets a day off of chores or extra allowance for a week, second place gets to choose their first chore next week. To keep the scoring and work load fair a good strategy is to have each name written once, remove the names after they have been drawn, once all the names have been drawn insert all the names back into your drawing bag of choice than redraw until all the chores have been distributed.
A good principal to keep in mind is that some chores take more time than others. A good way to handle the duration is rate the chore length, say cleaning the basement takes 45 minutes while cleaning the bathrooms takes 20 so whoever gets the basement is exempt from the next round of drawing. Another good rule to remember is parents get involved. If your children notice that you are lying on the couch while they are working than they will be less likely to work and their work will be of lower quality so set an example. Now get your family together and get ready to have a good time getting the house in order!
